Wellness is not by any means a new concept. The term wellness itself has
been dated back to 1654. In 5000 B.C.E. (before current era) "whole body
wellness" was evident in the healing traditions of China, India. In
ancient Greece, Hippocrates had also recognized the various factors that
contributed to overall health such as nutrition and exercise.
"Eating alone ill not keep a man well, he must also take exercise.
For food and exercise while possessing opposite qualities yet work together to
produce health" Wellness means different things to different people. Much
like individuality which allows us to be who we are, wellness contributes to
the state of who we are. Does it define us, it can.
The root and the core is and will always be "self". Self has
been defined as: n. Definition of one's identity, character, abilities, and
attitudes, especially in relation to persons or things outside oneself or
itself.
Self in this article are comprised of 3 key components. Mind, Body,
Spirit (Mind Body Soul, or Mind Body Connection). Mind Body Spirit is what most
people associate with things such as yoga, meditation and other "New Age
ideals". Call it what you will, the mind, body, spiritual connection is
our reference point for wellness, the center of who we are.
Dr. Judd Allen determined the 10 common elements of wellness to be
"environmental, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, occupational,
financial, mental, medical, physical, and social. In this article I will also
including dental and optical wellness. Over the next several articles I will be
expanding more on the wellness dimension series, and how it inter-relates not
only on a personal level, but the impact our own wellness has on others around
us. At the end of the this Wellness series one should be able to identify which
dimension of personal wellness that needs attention to reach personal optimal
wellness.
Wellness is a life long process, anyone proclaiming to be completely
well is most certainly "fortunate" however, I would challenge them
that as I must say we are all in a state of a precarious balancing act, we just
need to take a serious look at the world around us and see just how precarious
it is.
At the end of each following article, I will ask that you reflect
personally and journal the following based on the information provided to you.
- What do you want
- What are you doing
- Is it working
- What are your options
You often hear the statement "If I only knew then what I know
now" I challenge you based on what you know and learned today what are YOU
going to do about it.
"Most people come equipped by nature with all of the pieces of a
puzzle necessary to enjoy life with excellent health. BUT by the time they get
their career, and family underway, most have not only managed to scramble the
puzzle they actually lost some of the pieces." - Diane McLaren
